SSAW(Spiral Submerged Arc Welded) Steel Pipe

What’s SSAW Steel Pipe

SSAW Steel Pipe, also known as Spiral Submerged Arc Welded pipe, is a type of steel pipe characterized by its helical or spiral weld seam. Unlike longitudinal pipes, SSAW is manufactured by rolling high-quality steel coils at a specific angle (forming angle) into a cylindrical shape and then welding the edges together using submerged arc technology. This unique “spiral” design allows us to produce very large diameter pipes from relatively narrow steel strips.

Advantages of our SSAW Steel Pipe:

  • Large Diameter Versatility: We can produce a wide range of diameters (up to 3500mm) using the same width of raw material by simply adjusting the forming angle.
  • Stress Distribution: The spiral weld seam helps distribute internal pressure more evenly across the pipe body, reducing the risk of longitudinal cracking.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Because SSAW utilizes hot-rolled coils rather than expensive steel plates, it offers a significant price advantage for large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Enhanced Safety: The helical seam acts as a natural “arrestor” that prevents cracks from propagating straight through the pipe.

  • Wall Thickness: 5mm – 25.4mm.
  • Coatings: Available with 3PE, FBE, or Epoxy Lining for corrosion protection.

SSAW Steel Pipe Raw Material Standards

The raw material of SSAW pipe is mainly hot-rolled steel strip. The choice of raw materials has a great influence on the final steel pipe. Generally covers the following types of steel:

  • X42: Steel for oil pipelines with tensile strength of 420 MPa, often used for long-distance transportation of fluids such as oil and natural gas.
  • X52: With high strength, the tensile strength can reach 520 MPa, for high strength and high pressure environment.
  • Q235: carbon structural steel, yield strength is usually 235 MPa, often used for ordinary low-pressure fluid transport.
  • Q345: low-alloy high-strength structural steel, typically with yield strength of 345 MPa, used for high-pressure fluid transport.

More importantly, the chemical composition control of the raw material steel plate of SSAW pipe is also very strict. The content and proportion of each chemical element affect the corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance of the pipe.

SSAW Manufacturing Process

Our continuous production line ensures high efficiency and weld integrity:

  • Uncoiling & Leveling: The steel coil is unwound and flattened to ensure uniform thickness.
  • Edge Milling: The edges of the strip are milled to the precise bevel required for deep-penetration welding.
  • Spiral Forming: The strip enters the forming machine at a set angle, where rollers curve it into a spiral tube.
  • Submerged Arc Welding: The seam is welded simultaneously on the inside and outside (Double-Sided SAW) under a layer of flux to prevent oxidation.
  • NDT & Hydrotesting: Every pipe undergoes 100% Ultrasonic (UT) and X-ray testing, followed by hydrostatic pressure testing to ensure a leak-proof finish.
